HARRIET BERNSTEIN

“Jasper Johns, Claes Oldenburg, Larry Poons and other abstract expressionists caught my eye early on. Then Agnes Martin’s large, meditative canvases in soft pastel stole my heart. During two decades in NYC SoHo, I kept my eyes saturated with abstract art, and slowly built up a desire to make my own work. The pandemic was my moment to blossom. What started on my dining room table is now about to take over my living room. As my work continues to grow, I am in search of studio space where I can work on a series of larger works inspired by Agnes Martin.” Harriet Bernstein

RAM Bling, acrylic on canvas, 20 x 26 inches – N.F.S.

Chandler Biggs

RAM Bling is a social commentary on how society neglects the environment, takes our resources for granted, while holding our heads up high, almost proudly.  “Killing our ride”, is how the artist describes it, a metaphor for biting the hand that feeds us.

Chandler hails from an artist family in California, and is a recent newcomer to the island. Her mother and grandmother are both painters. She studied Animation at Cal State LA (CSULA), is a self taught painter, and has participated in various roles in DIY warehouse art spaces. She uses art as a self exploratory tool to process her observations about the external world, mirrored internally as a form of self discovery.

Contemporary, abstract, mixed media painter, Deborah T. Colter is a career artist working mostly on canvas. She combines elements that evolve and appear through an intentional process of discovery as each artwork evolves. This process is void of expectation, as each piece becomes a new exploration of form, line and color. Deborah masterfully structures layers, sometimes with architectural shapes, loose gestures and with an instinctive ability at finding balance and symmetry that captivates and holds the attention, “Inspiration starts with a mark, a color, a form, a layer, and it builds from there.”
Deborah graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1981 with a B.F.A. and has been making art full-time ever since.

CAROL BROWN GOLDBERG

A prolific artist in various mediums, Carol Brown Goldberg broke her right wrist in 2020 and could not paint for the first time in over forty years. What emerged was a spontaneous series called, On the Other Hand.  Squeezing paint directly out of tubes onto small pieces of paper with her functional left hand, narratives emerged and a series formed as she allowed the colors to drip and drop, sometimes oozing off the page. She was determined to create, despite her temporary impediment. When her right hand healed, she revisited the series to add with black pen the detailed, tiny interconnecting markings that have become an integral signature style of her larger canvas works, which she calls ‘Entanglement.’  Whether intentional, or subliminal, this series was influenced by her attraction to a short-lived avant-garde art movement, (1948 to 1952) known as CoBrA. Following WWII, an international group of pioneering artists caused a revolution in modern art. Considered the first truly international post-war avant-garde art movement, the members sought new means of expression: based on spontaneity and experimentation by rejecting rigid form and limited palettes. They chose vivid primary colors, applied in a primitivist and joyous child-like manner, which became a celebrated characteristic of the movement.  Carol is a longtime summer resident in Chilmark, and is otherwise based in Washington, DC.

Marianne Goldberg

In the late summer of 2015 Pathways founder, Marianne Goldberg, choreographed 10 dancers from across the country at The Yard theater and along the Chilmark coast. Inspired by ocean terrain, utilizing improvisational structures in perception, space, time and live presence, OceA Wilderness transported outdoor explorations into the architecture of the theater as an interior shoreline.

Marjorie Mason

Well known for her Vineyard landscape oil paintings in the hundreds, Marjorie Mason can be found mostly in her charming Chilmark studio filling in the details that capture the iconic scenery along the island’s shorelines, overlooking ponds, fields and trails. She is a keen observer. Her attention to subtle light changes, cloud forms, and an ability to draft perspective perfectly combine to recreate the picturesque habitat Cape Codders fall in love with. She can talk about color for hours, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. Her preferred medium is currently oil, yet she is equally adept at monotypes, which she put aside a decade or so ago so that she could create larger scale works.
“She creates simply to create; to connect with her surroundings, community, and the myriad of things that make the Cape and Islands so special.” – quote from Cape Cod Art / ART Annual 2020
Marjorie is otherwise represented by Christina Gallery, Edgartown and other Cape Cod galleries.

Untitled (Light Box), Grain wood, Glass, Epoxy, oil, 30 x 30 inches – $ 1,350

Avery Miner is a mixed media sculptor, a co-owner of the Miner Family Gallery in Vineyard Haven, and an island local. His sensory-based artworks are experiments in a variety of styles. He finds inspiration in materials as diverse as clay, leather, cloth, wood, and polyurethane – and combinations of these.

Avery is a graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art and Design where he majored in sculpture. To see more art by Avery, visit The Art of Avery Miner

Craig Miner

Self-taught contemporary artist, Craig Miner‘s passion to make art began in earnest after initiating and organizing the group project called “Whatever the Outcome,” a series of interactive pop-up art events where 1000’s of hand-painted magnets were distributed. After teaching art classes to teens at our local Charter School, where he experimented with various forms of low-brow street art, design and bold color, his bright palette and aesthetic took shape.

For the past few years he has been creating colorful paintings combined with collage featuring abstract elements, figures, text, and lately has been working on commission pieces incorporating his most popular elements on solar panels.

He has exhibited his work at The Workshop Gallery and has shared studio / gallery space with Althea Freeman Designs in Vineyard. In the Summer of 2023 he launched MFG (Miner Family Gallery in Vineyard Haven with his son and wife.

Solo Exhibition: Drawings, Paintings & Collage is on view through December 31st, 2023
Hours: Event Days from 12 to 9pm and By Appointment

Island architect Bruce MacNelly returned to making art 15 years ago, after a decades-long hiatus. MacNelly’s family background includes many artists, including his portrait artist father, and his brother, the acclaimed editorial cartoonist Jeff MacNelly. Bruce himself graduated from Williams College, Williamstown MA, in 1971 with a double major B.A. in Art History and Studio Art. He then earned his Master of Architecture degree in 1975 from University of Virginia, and worked in the office of the widely influential architect, painter and academic Michael Graves until 1979 before moving to the island in 1981 with his wife and business partner, Linda Joy Cohen.

MacNelly credits Michael Graves as a major influence in his art practice, especially his approach to collage making – which is spontaneous, intuitive and instinctive. Integrating various influences: including art history, portraiture, architecture, political commentary, and collage, MacNelly works in a variety of mediums, on varied surfaces.

PAST SEASONS

2021-2022 Season

JACK RYAN : A selection of prints of original pen and ink stipple illustrations

of iconic buildings and vistas in New York City and surrounds | framed.

Gallery hours: Friday, Saturday, Sunday : 11am to 5pm

If you missed Jack Ryan’s recent exhibition of 30 drawings at the West Tisbury Public Library you can now view a selection of 15 framed prints at Pathways through April 23, 2022. Island based part-time artist, Jack Ryan has for decades been fascinated with his hometown, New York City and surrounds.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. Ryan studied with architectural illustrators at the renowned Pratt Institute of Art. As a young man in the 1970’s he explored and scrutinized nearly every architecturally significant building and bridge in Manhattan, sometimes in passing, other times as a dedicated field trip. Oftentimes trespassing and possibly endangering his life!

You can read more about these experiences in the article Jack Ryan at the Post Office / Arts and Ideas, 2015

Mr. Ryan employs a stippling technique for his original pen and ink illustrations, using Rapido-graph technical pens with minute nibs. A time consuming effort, the success of which is measured by achieving relative contrast between light and shadow using dots.

Whitney Cleary Oil Paintings 2020 – 2021

Artist Statement: My paintings attempt to represent a single moment of observation, cast in the light of one’s own subjective experience. It is in this experience that we find ourselves connected to the world around us, but also divided by the beauty of our loneliness. I work in many thin layers of oil paint on wood, adding and subtracting until it feels right. I have no formal training as an artist, but have had many teachers along the way. Originally from Western Mass, I have found home here on Martha’s Vineyard.

Jamaican native, SHAVANÁE ANDERSON, who now resides on Martha’s Vineyard, has been making art for most of her life, yet only started painting a year ago. Her vibrantly colored, Afrocentric, graphic compositions are part of a series of 12 striking portraits of inspirational women whom she feels have left an imprint on her and who have influenced her life positively – including Des’ree, Michelle Obama, Toni Morrison, Oprah, her Mother, Beyonce, Frida Kahlo, and close fiends. She attributes her early inspiration to an art teacher who encouraged her, her own artistic mother, 90’s sitcoms, learning about the Harlem Renaissance, the Black Lives Matter Movement, and films like Black Panther. She works at various scales, using a number of mediums on paper, wood-panel and canvas. Anderson graduated from Suffolk University, majoring in Communication with a concentration in Film Studies and cinematography.
A selection of paintings by BASIA JAWORSKA from her ongoing Roots Music Series, of iconic African American musicians who each have pushed the boundaries of their art form, opening the doors for others to follow in their footsteps. Her subjects include Thelonius Monk – he had a unique improvisational style and made numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire | Tina Turner – recipient of 12 Grammy Awards | Big Bill Broonzy (born Lee Conley Bradley) – a key figure in the development of blues music in the 20th century | Big Mama Thornton (born Willie Mae Thornton). She was the first to record Leiber and Stoller’s “Hound Dog”, in 1952 | Sister Rosetta Tharpe – the first recording star of Gospel music. She pioneered electric guitar techniques using heavy distortion giving rise to the electric blues. She influenced the British blues sound in the 60’s: Keith Richards and Eric Clapton.Jaworska works with oil and acrylic and mixed media on canvas, paper, wood panel.
Painter, CHIOKE MORAIS has recently been making one-of-a-kind utilitarian ceramics under the name Bent Wing Pottery, now available to the general public. LET THERE BEE LIGHT by Theresa Berryman
Hand poured natural beeswax candles:  tapers in many colors, little bear hugging a hive, angels, columns, more and more…this high quality batch of beeswax features the bee parts you find in unfiltered honey. The smell of beeswax is addictively warm and relaxing.
but wait . . .there’s more . . .did you know that paraffin (most) candles are toxic to you in the burning and to the environment in the processing? Natural Beeswax can clear the air of undesirable particulate. 100% pure beeswax candles might seem expensive compared to the paraffin tea lights at $5 for 100 at Ikea. But when you find out the pro and cons you will be sold on candles made by bees. For more on the benefits that come with natural beeswax  click here…
