Walker T. Roman Artist Statement

I’m less interested in reproducing reality than I am in observing our experience of it.

The works presented for this show, created between 2011 and 2022 address the complicated and shifting relationship between abstraction and representation. I feel painting is most successful when they bleed into one another, when a familiar subject gains a sense of mystery by selectively removing details, or a gestural abstraction begins to remind us of something we’ve seen before. Over the last 11 years my output has oscillated between the two forms, each informing my practice in necessary ways. Now I am displaying them together for the first time exhibiting the permeability of these two concepts within my own work.
