Now & Upcoming…

Shout-out to Pathways for “keeping a light on in Chilmark”. The winter months for me, can be so dull and long in the cold season. Pathways gives us all a creative outlet for participating or joining as audience, and has so many events going on, with free food and admission. What a wonderful thing Marianne Goldberg started. I hope it continues for a long time. Holly Wayman

The years of COVID were challenging, but for Islanders there were also moments of great creative expression. For some, it was a time for bringing to life projects that, under normal circumstances, would never have been imagined. This was the case for Charlie Giordano and the motorcycle he calls Voodoo Doll. Built over the course of two years in his West Tisbury shop, it is a love letter to art, motorcycles, and to perseverance.

“This is an example of the creativity found on the Island today and illustrates the value and refuge found within the creative process, especially during isolation. It also explores how seclusion can aid in making things and why that is beneficial to both the artist and the culture of a community. Motorcycles are the perfect medium to explore the world around me and express myself. Voodoo Doll represents the physical embodiment of the magic I experience when riding motorcycles. I wanted to explore and share this magic with the world.” -Charlie Giordano

With the motorcycle at its center, this exhibition follows Charlie through his journey of building Voodoo Doll, and includes tools, video, drawings, and photography.

The book, Borders to Bridges contains practical lesson plans, narratives, poetry, mixed media artwork, mindfulness exercises, and resources for K-12 educators, after-school programs, refugee programs, university, adult education, and for parents, guardians, mentors, and counselors to enrich learning and engage participants in critical issues that touch their lives and communities. Contributors include world-renowned educators, poets, artists, writers, and consultants from 38 countries and 20 states of the U.S. (including more than 50 people from Martha’s Vineyard!).

On The Seawall is a community gallery for new writing and commentary during a time of emergency. (There always is, and there always has been, an emergency.) We now publish on a bimonthly schedule, and we read submissions throughout the year.
We think of On The Seawall as a “gallery” — a location in the neighborhood, a place where we display our work for our community, where everyone is welcome to create and to witness the work. We are living in a time of emergency during which our art may act as performances of intervention and refuge. Back in 2007, I named this site On The Seawall for a reason — because there always is an emergency, communal and/or personal, requiring a stay against the flood.
