… art, the gardens, the organic food, the dancing for your soul, the yoga, the need for community, motherhood, the concept that I had always believed in but had no way to put into words: the life energy.”
Rhode Island born, based on Martha’s Vineyard since 2007, Darcie Lee Hanaway makes mixed media paintings in her Oak Bluffs studio when she’s not designing gardens or traveling in the off-season. She has criss-crossed the United States, especially loves the Caribbean and Spanish speaking countries, and has lived off the grid at times, drawing inspiration from people, places and what she calls, “dancing with it all”.

Hanaway describes her recent work as a mixed media narrative dealing with exploration of the self, society, nature and the larger world. She is drawn to cycles and systems in nature, incorporates cultural and daily life references. She paints intuitively, creating texture with multiple layers, and does not shy away from bright colors.
